The CELPIP Speaking Test assesses your ability to communicate effectively in English. The test consists of eight speaking tasks, each designed to evaluate different aspects of your speaking skills. Below are some common CELPIP speaking topics along with sample answers to help you prepare.

1. Giving Advice

Question: Your friend is planning to move to a new city for work. Give some advice on how to adjust to a new place.

Sample Answer: "Moving to a new city can be both exciting and challenging. I would suggest researching the area before moving, finding a good neighborhood close to work, and joining local groups to meet new people. It’s also helpful to explore public transportation and nearby grocery stores to settle in quickly. Lastly, staying open-minded and embracing the new culture will make the transition smoother."

2. Describing a Personal Experience

Question: Describe a time when you helped someone.

Sample Answer: "Last year, I helped my neighbor when her car broke down. She was struggling to get to an important appointment, so I offered to give her a ride. She was really grateful, and it made me feel good to assist someone in need. This experience reminded me that small acts of kindness can make a big difference."

3. Expressing an Opinion

Question: Do you think social media has a positive or negative impact on society?

Sample Answer: "I believe social media has both positive and negative effects. On the positive side, it helps people stay connected, promotes businesses, and provides easy access to information. However, it also leads to privacy concerns, cyberbullying, and addiction. In my opinion, using social media responsibly and in moderation is key to enjoying its benefits while avoiding its drawbacks."

4. Talking About a Preference

Question: Do you prefer working from home or working in an office? Why?

Sample Answer: "I prefer working from home because it saves commuting time and allows me to have a more flexible schedule. I can focus better in a quiet environment and take short breaks when needed. However, I do miss the social interaction of an office. So, a combination of both remote and office work would be ideal for me."

5. Comparing and Persuading

Question: Your company is deciding whether to offer free gym memberships or free public transport passes for employees. Which option do you support and why?

Sample Answer: "I think offering free public transport passes would be a better choice. It would encourage employees to use public transportation, reducing traffic congestion and pollution. Additionally, it would save employees money on commuting costs. While gym memberships are beneficial for health, not everyone uses them regularly. Therefore, public transport passes would benefit a larger number of employees."

6. Describing an Unusual Situation

Question: You were expecting to receive an important package today, but it hasn’t arrived. Call the delivery company and explain the situation.

Sample Answer: "Hello, my name is [Your Name], and I was expecting a package to be delivered today, but it hasn’t arrived yet. The tracking system shows that it was supposed to be delivered this morning. I need this package urgently, so could you please check its status and let me know when I can expect it? I’d really appreciate your help. Thank you."

7. Making Predictions

Question: How do you think technology will change education in the next 10 years?

Sample Answer: "In the next 10 years, I believe technology will make education more accessible and interactive. Online learning will become even more advanced, with virtual reality and artificial intelligence helping students learn in immersive environments. Schools might also use AI tutors to personalize lessons based on each student’s needs. Overall, education will become more flexible and engaging thanks to technological advancements."

8. Expressing Disagreement Politely

Question: Your friend believes that watching TV is a waste of time. Do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer: "I understand why some people think TV is a waste of time, but I respectfully disagree. TV can be educational, providing news, documentaries, and informative programs. It can also be a great way to relax and unwind after a long day. Of course, excessive TV watching isn’t good, but when used in moderation, it can be both entertaining and beneficial."
